MCPS Official Job Description
Summary Description: Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Physical Demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special Requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Support behavioral interventions as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and behavioral management. Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials, provide instructional support, and communicate effectively. Familiarity with ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and related policies. Ability to work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians. Knowledge of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) standards.
Education, Training, and Experience: Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited college or university. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Certificate License: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
