Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. The teacher collaborates with general education teachers, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside instructional hours is mandatory, as per the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education settings must complete specific MCPS courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.
Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited institution. Must be fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of relevant teaching experience. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
