Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks an experienced R&D Test Engineer to design, analyze, build, commission, and maintain electrical test equipment for HTS magnets. You will collaborate across manufacturing, R&D, procurement, and SPARC teams to meet aggressive test schedules and push requirements.

Strong electrical engineering fundamentals and hands-on test facility experience are essential. You will develop test plans, ensure data reliability, manage documentation, and lead anomaly investigations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or related field.
  • 5+ years designing/commissioning specialized electrical apparatus.
  • 2+ years using electrical analysis software (PLECS/LTSPICE/ETAP/Simulink).
  • Understanding electromagnetic fundamentals and system behavior.
  • Familiarity with NEC/NFPA 70 and OSHA safety standards.
  • Experience with high-power electronics and energy storage devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate technical topics to varied audiences.
  • Willingness to travel and work nights/weekends occasionally.
  • Experience designing new test facilities and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build test equipment for energizing superconducting magnets.
  • Contribute to electrical testing infrastructure in new facilities.
  • Develop test plans with data objectives and instrumentation needs.
  • Maintain well-documented requirements, risks, and safety plans.
  • Identify hazards and produce job hazard assessments and test readiness reviews.
  • Manage design reviews, wiring lists, schematics, CAD assemblies, and software.
  • Troubleshoot integration and test discrepancies during build and operation.
  • Iterate designs and test methods to improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Analyze test data and develop custom tools to interpret results.
  • Lead anomaly investigations and present findings to physicists and engineers.
  • Plan future expansion including equipment and floor layouts for scalability.
