Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an experienced R&D Test Engineer to design, build, and validate high-current electrical test setups for HTS magnets. You will collaborate with manufacturing, R&D, procurement, and SPARC teams to execute tests and refine objectives, while ensuring safety and data integrity.

The role requires a strong foundation in electrical/mechanical engineering, 5+ years in specialized electrical equipment, and proficiency with EDA/analysis tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or science field.
• 5+ years designing/building/commissioning specialized electrical equipment.
• 2+ years using electrical analysis software (PLECS, LTSPICE, ETAP, Simulink).
• Aptitude to apply electromagnetic fundamentals to system behavior.
• Familiarity with NEC/NFPA 70, OSHA, NFPA 70E, IEC, IEEE standards.
• Experience with high-power electronics (rectifiers, DC/DC converters, inverters).
• Experience with stored energy devices (batteries, supercapacitors).
• Strong troubleshooting and communication skills; self-motivated.

Responsibilities

• Design, analyze, review, procure and build test equipment for energizing superconducting magnets.
• Contribute to ground-up design of electrical testing infrastructure in new facilities.
• Develop test plans and ensure data reliability with instrumentation and controls.
• Maintain well-documented requirements, risks, and safety documentation.
• Troubleshoot integration and test discrepancies during build and operation.
• Lead anomaly investigations and present results to physicists and engineers.
• Plan future expansion including capital equipment and scalable test infra.
