Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Cambridge, MA is seeking an R&D Engineer to design, build, and commission high voltage systems for superconducting magnets, supporting SPARC/ARC projects. You will run tests, analyze data, and collaborate across manufacturing, R&D, procurement, and SPARC teams to achieve aggressive schedules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science field required;Mechanical, electrical, or applied physics preferred.
  • 2+ years’ experience as an R&D/test engineer for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience selecting and using instrumentation such as thermocouples, sensors, oscilloscopes, transducers, strain gauges.
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures.
  • Proficiency with CAD design in Siemens NX or equivalent.
  • Fundamental EM knowledge: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s law, AC/DC, solenoids.
  • Strong troubleshooting and attention to detail.
  • Ability to present trade studies comparing technical approaches.
  • Data reduction/analysis skills for test results.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new high voltage system designs and subsystems for R&D tests.
  • Design, build, and commission high voltage test equipment for campaigns.
  • Perform structural, electrical, and thermal analyses to predict test results.
  • Build expertise in testing superconducting magnets under high voltage.
  • Support production, test, integration, and commissioning of SPARC insulated coils.
  • Maintain well-documented requirements and risks; align stakeholders on data needs.
  • Collaborate with I&C engineers to develop instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Maintain documentation: wiring lists, schematics, CAD assemblies, BOMs, test logs, software.
  • Develop data tools to analyze results; present trade studies and test data.
  • Deliver presentations on trade studies, design reviews, and test readiness.
