Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago seeks a tenure-track English instructor at Harold Washington College to teach composition and related courses on campus. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teaches composition courses at all levels and may be assignedliterature, journalism writing, and other English-designatedcourses as needed.
• Uses innovative approaches to engage students.
• Develops, reviews, and maintains currency in assigned area(s)of responsibility and curricula, responding to the needs offirst-generation college students of diverse ethnic, cultural, andacademic backgrounds.
• Prepares and evaluates clear and effective class assignmentsand/or examinations and provides feedback responsive to the needsand interests of diverse populations, promoting long-term growthand improvement.
• Organizes and explains instructional materials in waysappropriate to students' abilities and learning strengths.
• Develops and evaluates learning outcomes and studentperformance.
• Employs a variety of teaching methods, includinginterdisciplinary content in the classroom, that engage studentsand encourage them to be motivated and critical self-learners.
• Engages with and advocates for students in classroom andnon-classroom settings.
• Utilizes the online learning management system and thoughtfullyintegrates technology to support student learning and enhance thein-person classroom experience.
• Demonstrates a strong commitment to campus engagement bymaintaining an active presence on campus, participating instudent-centered initiatives, and collaborating with faculty,staff, and students to support student success.
• Participates in professional or shared governance committeesand in departmental activities, such as development of departmentalpolicies and procedures, maintenance of course outlines, peerevaluation, program review, student learning outcomes assessment,and other curricular development.
• Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goalsand cultivates a safe environment that respects the diversity ofindividuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students andconveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
• Adheres to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies,procedures, and code of ethics.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric, English,Writing, Creative Writing, or related field required.
• Community college teaching experience preferred and/or a clearunderstanding of the mission of the community college.
• Experience in multi-modal approaches and student-centeredpedagogy as well as in using technology in an educationalsetting.
• Knowledge of current best practices, methods, research, andtheories in the various levels of composition and working withfirst generation students of diverse backgrounds.
• Experience designing and/or teaching curricula responsive tothe needs and interests of diverse populations.
• Demonstrated experience using and assessing student learningoutcomes.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to activelyparticipate and effectively work with department colleagues andmembers of the college community.
• Experience teaching journalism writing, media writing, orrelated coursework strongly preferred.

The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $65,000. Offeredsalary will be determined by the respective collective bargainingagreement and applicant's education.
