Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Fuel Cycle Nuclear Engineer to advance storage and transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive materials. This role sits in the NMPTSA group within the Integrated Fuel Cycle Section, Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, and Fusion and Fission and Science Directorate at ORNL.

You will analyze, design, and document mechanical systems for waste management, interacting with researchers, management, fabricators, and sponsors.

Qualifications

• PhD/MS/BS with substantial nuclear engineering experience.
• Experience performing nuclear, mechanical, thermal or structural analysis.
• Knowledge of regulatory testing for transportation and storage packages containing radioactive materials.
• Proficiency with CAD/FEA tools (ANSYS/ABAQUS/SolidWorks).
• Excellent written and oral communication; ability to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

• Independently solve complex technical problems in spent nuclear fuel waste management.
• Develop analytical methods and technologies for storage, transportation, and disposal.
• Coordinate documentation, design process and mechanical analyses for waste management systems.
• Provide technical direction and guidance; prepare presentations and reports.
