Job summary

OpenAI, Inc. is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer for AI Infra in San Francisco. You will embed with customers to deploy frontier models, map problems, and deliver production-grade software that runs on AI infrastructure and chip-design workloads.

You will collaborate with customer engineers, researchers, and product teams to define workloads, run experiments, and validate performance. The role offers a hybrid schedule, relocation assistance, and travel up to 50% for engagements.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work.
• Able to scope and deliver complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments.
• Experience writing production-grade software and debugging unfamiliar systems.
• Hands-on experience with applied ML, model evaluation, data quality, experimentation, or model-behavior analysis.
• Experience in semiconductor development, data-center systems or inference engineering is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Own technical delivery for semiconductor and AI-infrastructure workstreams from scoping to production deployment.
• Work closely with customer engineers to understand workflows, define workloads, baselines and success criteria.
• Scope and sequence delivery, identify blockers, and balance scope, speed and quality.
• Build and debug production-quality software, including harnesses, integrations and product features for frontier models in chip design, verification, inference and performance engineering.
• Design reproducible experiments, evaluations, graders and benchmarks to test approaches and validate results.
• Investigate model behavior and failure modes with researchers to improve capability.
• Contribute to core product development with engineers to close tooling gaps and share field learnings.
• Lead technical discussions and maintain alignment across customer, Product and Research teams.
• Turn successful approaches into reusable software, tools and playbooks to reduce future engagement effort.
