Job summary

OpenAI is seeking Forward Deployed Software Engineers to lead complex deployments of frontier models for government and public sector customers. You will embed with defense, intelligence, and federal stakeholders, drive delivery, and ship full-stack solutions that deliver measurable mission impact.

The role is based in Washington, DC, Seattle, or San Francisco with a hybrid model (3 days in office) and relocation assistance. Travel up to 50% is required, including on-site customer work.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience, especially in customer-facing or government contexts.
• Active TS/SCI clearance or equivalent.
• Experience delivering complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments.
• Production-grade code across frontend and backend (Python/JavaScript or similar).
• Familiarity with cloud models (Azure/AWS), Kubernetes, Terraform, and related infra.
• Experience with systems powered by LLMs or generative models and their UX implications.
• Ability to simplify complexity and communicate clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Willingness to travel up to 50% and relocate if needed.

Responsibilities

• Own technical delivery across multiple government deployments from prototype to production.
• Embed with public sector customers to design and build applications powered by OpenAI models.
• Enable deployments by delivering observable systems spanning infra to applications.
• Prototype and build full-stack systems using Python, JavaScript, or similar stacks.
• Guide customers on maximizing business value from their applications.
• Build relationships with customer leadership and stakeholders to ensure success.
• Scope work, sequence delivery, and manage trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality.
• Contribute directly to code when momentum requires it.
• Codify patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks for reuse.
• Share field feedback with Research and Product to influence roadmap.
