Job summary

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, seeks a compassionate Surgery Barn Admissions & Barn Crew to be the first point of contact for clients, ensuring smooth arrivals and departures in a fast-paced veterinary setting.

The ideal candidate will handle horses safely, coordinate patient check-in/out, and communicate clearly with veterinarians and staff. This hourly role requires physical ability, teamwork, and a calm demeanor under pressure.

Qualifications

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
• Equine handling and restraint.
• Comfortable working with horses.
• Excellent communication and people skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to multitask.
• Basic computer skills.
• Comfortable working with clients who may be experiencing emotional situations.
• Ability to work as a team.
• Professional, dependable, and a positive attitude.
• Ability to safely handle all ages, breeds and sizes of horses.
• Familiarity with operating a tractor and lawn mower.
• Experience cleaning stalls.
• Ability to monitor horses for signs of colic.
• Be able to lift 100lbs.

Responsibilities

• Have excellent customer service, communication and horse handling skills.
• Greet clients promptly and care for their needs.
• Safely load and unload horses from trailers.
• Check horses in and out of the hospital and document patient information.
• Place the patient in the correct location and create charts in the system.
• Communicate questions or concerns to doctors or staff.
• Provide clients with information about hospital procedures and policies.
• Direct clients using knowledge of hospital layout.
• Remain calm during emergencies and high-stress situations.
• Ensure belongings are accounted for at admission and discharge.
• Coordinate discharges and medications to go home with patients.
• Monitor outpatients and communicate with hospital staff about patient status.
• Keep admission/discharge materials clean and organized.
• Perform husbandry duties: feeding, watering, cleaning stalls.
• Assist with cleaning, bedding, and disinfecting stalls.
• Keep barn clean and organized and maintain hay and straw areas.
• Operate a tractor and mow fields/weed eater.
• Assist with general maintenance and any other duties.
