Job summary

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team partners with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems, delivering end-to-end deployments and measurable impact. This role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid model (3 days in office) and relocation assistance; up to 50% travel may be required.

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will own discovery, system design, build, and production rollout, collaborating closely with customer engineering and domain teams to influence

Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience with customer-facing work.
• Experience delivering complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments.
• Production-grade code in Python/JavaScript across frontend and backend.

Responsibilities

• Own technical delivery across deployments from prototype to production.
• Build full-stack systems delivering customer value and improving learning loops.
• Embed with customer teams, understand their needs, and drive adoption of what you build.
• Scope work, sequence delivery, and remove blockers early.
• Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality; adjust plans to protect delivery.
• Contribute code when progress depends on it; share field feedback with Research and Product.
