Job summary

Sure Steel, Inc. is seeking a dependable Forklift Operator to safely move and stage steel and materials within our shop and yard. You will load and unload, verify deliveries, and assist with load securement for on-time shipments, while maintaining a clean, organized work area.

The role requires current forklift certification, the ability to work outdoors in varying weather, and a focus on safe, efficient operations in collaboration with fabrication and field crews.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
• Current forklift operator training and OSHA-certified.
• Prior forklift experience in a steel, manufacturing, construction, or warehouse environment preferred.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects and work outdoors in varying weather.

Responsibilities

• Operate a forklift to load, unload, move, and stage materials and equipment.
• Receive incoming deliveries, verify materials against paperwork, and report shortages or damage.
• Stage material for fabrication crews and outbound shipments to job sites.
• Organize and store materials in the shop and yard with clear labeling.
• Load and unload flatbed trucks, assist with load securement.
• Perform daily pre-shift inspections and report defects; participate in basic maintenance.
• Follow OSHA and company safety rules; wear PPE; participate in safety meetings.

This role keeps fabrication and construction operations running by getting the right material to the right place at the right time. It is a hands-on position for a certified operator who takes pride in safe, efficient work and wants to grow with a reputable company.Key ResponsibilitiesMaterial Handling:Operate a forklift to load, unload, move, and stack steel, fabricated components, construction materials, and equipment, ensuring safe and efficient transport to designated work areas.Receive incoming deliveries, verify materials against paperwork, and report shortages or damage to supervisors.Stage material for fabrication crews and for outbound shipment to job sites, following project priorities and schedules.Storage and Organization:Organize and maintain materials, supplies, and equipment in the shop and yard, keeping inventory well-organized, labeled, and accessible to crew members.Stack and store loads securely and within rated capacity, using dunnage and blocking as required.Truck Loading and Securement:Load and unload flatbed trucks and trailers, assisting drivers with proper load placement, rigging, strapping, and securement.Coordinate with shipping, fabrication, and field crews so loads are ready on time and match the load list.Equipment Inspection and Maintenance:Perform and document daily pre-shift inspections of the forklift, including forks, mast, chains, tires, brakes, horn, lights, fluid levels, and battery or fuel.Remove unsafe equipment from service and report malfunctions, damage, or defects to supervisors immediately.Assist with basic cleaning and routine maintenance of forklifts, attachments, and related equipment.Safety Compliance:Operate all equipment in accordance with OSHA powered industrial truck standards, company procedures, and site rules, including seat belt use and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).Maintain safe travel speeds, clear sightlines, and safe distances from pedestrians, and use spotters when visibility is limited.Report any safety hazards, incidents, or near misses to supervisors immediately and take appropriate corrective actions as directed.Participate in safety meetings and training, including recertification when required.Housekeeping:Keep travel lanes, loading areas, and storage areas clear, clean, and free of debris.Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and housekeeping standards.Team Collaboration:Work collaboratively with ironworkers, welders, fabricators, drivers, and other crew members to ensure efficient and timely completion of work.Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to receive instructions, provide updates, and coordinate activitiesQualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent work experience.Current forklift operator training and certification in accordance with OSHA requirements (or ability to obtain it before operating independently); Sure Steel will evaluate operators on our equipment.Prior forklift experience in a steel, manufacturing, construction, or warehouse environment preferred.Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, bend, stoop, kneel, climb on and off equipment, and work in various weather conditions, indoors and outdoors.Basic knowledge of steel materials, rigging, and load securement preferred; on-the-job training will be provided.
