Job summary

Lockport Steel in Illinois is seeking a dedicated forklift operator to join our manufacturing team. You will transport structural steel and fabricated components, load and unload trucks, stage materials for production, and help maintain a clean, safe yard and warehouse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate sit-down forklifts and other material handling equipment to transport structural steel, plate, and fabricated components throughout the facility.
  • Load and unload inbound and outbound trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Stage materials for production departments including fabrication, welding, fitting, machining, and shipping.
  • Verify material quantities, dimensions, and identification against work orders, packing lists, and shipping documents.
  • Organize and maintain yard and warehouse storage locations.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Assist with inventory control activities, cycle counts, and material tracking.
  • Ensure materials are properly secured, stored, and protected from damage.
  • Support shipping and receiving operations as required.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and forklift operating requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Assist production personnel with material movement and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of forklift operating experience in a manufacturing, steel service center, construction, warehouse, or industrial environment.
  • Experience handling oversized, heavy, or irregular steel products preferred.
  • Ability to read work orders, material tags, shipping documents, and production paperwork.
  • Basic understanding of inventory and material tracking processes.
  • Strong attention to safety and detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts for extended periods.
Preferred Certifications
  • OSHA Forklift Operator Certification (preferred but not required).
  • NCCCO Industrial Lift Truck Certification (preferred but not required)
