Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to high school and one year of full-time work in areas such as fire suppression, conservation, forestry, land surveying, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Experience substitutions for education may apply per agency guidance.

Responsibilities

  • May lead wildland firefighting efforts and coordinate with external resources on suppression activities.
  • Assesses environmental conditions (weather, topography, fuel type) and constructs a fire line using hand tools.
  • Attends mandatory technical training and the TN/KY Wildland Fire Academy for certification.
  • Gathers and reports information for fire reports and resource allocation.
  • Operates hand-held equipment and heavy machinery as needed (bulldozers, tractors, etc.).
  • Maintains facilities and equipment readiness for incident response.
  • Educates cooperators and the public on fire behavior and safety; delivers training.
  • Monitors seedling storage and participates in timber harvest site reviews for BMPs and contract compliance.
