Job summary

Elmhurst Hospital Center, part of NYC Health + Hospitals, is seeking a dietary services supervisor responsible for food preparation and service in a hospital kitchen. Under professional supervision, you will oversee operations in a dietary division and supervise Cooks and Dietary Aides.

You will ensure sanitation, manage inventories, prepare schedules, and coordinate food orders to support patient meals and staff dining.

Qualifications

  • A four-year high school diploma or educational equivalent, plus specified food service supervision training.
  • Two years of full-time experience in quantity food preparation and/or service.
  • Two-year Dietetic Technician training program approved by the ADA.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises operation of a section of a hospital kitchen and related serving units.
  • Instructs and supervises Cooks, Dietary Aides and other staff.
  • Supervises sanitation and housekeeping to maintain food prep standards.
  • Prepares work schedules and assigns duties.

Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position

Under professional supervision, is responsible for the food preparation and service in a dietary division of a hospital or health care facility; performs related work.

Examples Of Typical Tasks
  • Supervises the operation of a section of a hospital kitchen, a food distribution and ward serving unit, or a staff dining room or employee cafeteria.
  • Instructs and supervises Cooks, Dietary Aides and other subordinate employees in the preparation, distribution and service of food.
  • Supervises the sanitation and housekeeping activities of a food service operation to insure proper standards in the preparation and service of food, e.g., supervises dishwashing and potwashing activities and the cleaning of kitchens, food storage areas, kitchen machinery and equipment, cafeterias and dining rooms.
  • Prepares work schedules and assigns duties. Checks for personnel coverage and adherence to schedules.
  • Receives and checks food and other supplies and supervises their storage and distribution.
  • Requisitions foods and supplies. Makes out food orders and supply orders. Maintains accurate inventories and issues reports thereon as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; and, (a) completion of a ninety-hour course in food service supervision approved by the American Dietetic Association or the New York State Department of Education, and two years full-time experience in quantity food preparation and/or service; or, (b) completion of a two-year Dietetic Technician training program approved by the American Dietetic Association; or,
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
