Job summary

The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks an Assistant Foods Manager to supervise and participate in the management of one or more food-service areas at Mt Ida Dining in Newton. This role plans and oversees food preparation, estimates and orders supplies, and maintains inventory while supervising staff to ensure sanitation and cost controls.

Responsibilities include staff training, cash handling oversight, and coordinating with unit management; the incumbent may work varied shifts, including

Qualifications

• At least five years of full-time or equivalent food-service experience.
• Certified as a food handler within six months via a recognized program (ServSafe).
• Knowledge of high-volume food prep and serving in a college/university setting preferred.
• Understanding of sanitation standards and proper food storage procedures.
• Ability to manage cash handling procedures and oversee unit cash accounting.
• Ability to give clear oral and written instructions and maintain records.

Responsibilities

• Assist in determining material and labor needs and plan menus for the area.
• Supervise and participate in food production and service to meet quality standards.
• Oversee cleanliness, sanitation, and maintenance of areas and equipment.
• Order supplies, verify condition on arrival, and manage storage and inventories.
• Keep accurate records of food served, labor hours, and sales counts.
• Supervise cash handling and operating of registers per policies.
• Develop procedures to minimize operating costs with unit management.
• Respond to customer complaints as needed.
• Train and supervise staff, including hiring and assigning work.
• Act as unit manager during absence and cover weekend shifts if needed.
