Job summary

HRL Laboratories, an IBM company, is seeking a Focal Plane Engineer in California to lead semiconductor process development for infrared devices and FPAs. You will interface with customers and internal teams, drive RCCA activities, and coordinate with vendors on fabrication and tape-out procedures.

The role requires 5+ years in fabrication, cleanroom experience, and a strong grasp of device physics, SPC/DOE/JMP data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of fabrication process experience.
• Hands-on experience with cleanroom fabrication and semiconductor process development.
• Experience analyzing manufacturing data, including SPC, DOE, and JMP or similar tools.

Responsibilities

• Develop semiconductor processes and integration schemes to support infrared device architectures and FPA manufacturing.
• Execute and manage FPA manufacturing plans, ensuring engineering activities are completed and baselined.
• Evaluate and optimize process routes, establish best practices, and drive improvements in cost, schedule, yield, and manufacturability.
• Document processes, prepare technical reports, review metrology and data, and perform failure analysis.
• Provide technical leadership for RCCA activities and develop recovery plans.
• Support mask design and tape-out activities by reviewing process design rules.
• Collaborate with subcontractors and vendors on transfer, troubleshooting, and issue resolution.
• Monitor build progress, WIP, and configurations, identifying efficiency opportunities.
• Apply cost, schedule, and risk management to development and manufacturing activities.
• Work with cross-disciplinary teams to develop scalable, manufacturable process solutions.
• Use data-driven analysis to identify improvements and resolve manufacturing challenges.
• Serve as a technical interface to customers and stakeholders translating requirements into priorities.
