Job summary

HRL Laboratories, an IBM company, seeks a Focal Plane Engineer to act as the primary technical interface for process and product development across the full manufacturing lifecycle. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with 5+ years of fabrication process experience.
• Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with customers and program stakeholders, translate customer needs into technical requirements, and advocate for program priorities.
• Hands-on experience with cleanroom fabrication and semiconductor process development.
• Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and process requirements, KPIs, and tolerances.
• Experience analyzing manufacturing and process data, including SPC, DOE, and statistical analysis using JMP or similar tools.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and drive sustainable improvements.
• Demonstrated ability to foster a results-oriented culture.
• Track record in semiconductor processing, microelectronics, or related manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity with programming environments and databases to analyze large datasets.

Responsibilities

• Develop semiconductor processes and integration schemes to support infrared device architectures and FPA manufacturing.
• Execute and manage FPA manufacturing plans, ensuring engineering activities are completed prior to build initiation.
• Evaluate and optimize process routes, establish best practices, and drive cost, schedule, yield improvements.
• Document processes, prepare technical reports, review inline metrology and data, perform root cause analysis.
• Provide technical leadership for RCCA activities and recovery plans.
• Support mask design and tape-out by defining process rules and reviewing mask data.
• Coordinate with subcontractors and external vendors on process transfer and issue resolution.
• Monitor build progress, WIP, and configurations; identify efficiency opportunities.
• Apply cost, schedule, and risk management to development and manufacturing activities.
• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to develop scalable, manufacturable process solutions.
• Leverage data-driven analysis to identify process improvements and address challenges.
• Serve as technical interface to customers and program stakeholders.
