Job description

Bindery Machine Operator

Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines, including those with multiple cutting heads, control surfaces, or attachments such as inkjet and mailing devices, case making & decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines, and automatic bindery machines with multiple functions. These machines are used to produce finished products like books, catalogs, manuals, directories, and magazines.

Inspect equipment regularly for safety issues and ensure proper operation.

Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) that contain various process stations, feeding collated sheets or signatures, and performing functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and stacking completed products.

Make necessary adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine and direct the production crew throughout the process.

Monitor quality, output, and productivity to meet production standards.

Required Skills

• General knowledge of bindery machines, including fully automatic binding machines, multiple station collators, and folding units, either individually or combined, or experience with folding to perform standard and specialized folds of printed materials.
• Thorough knowledge of setup, operation, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of one or more bindery machines to complete various folding and finishing tasks.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders and job specifications, determine machine operations needed, and maintain dimensional accuracy.
• Knowledge of paper stock qualities and skill in setting up and adjusting machines to accommodate different weights, colors, and qualities, preventing impressions on printed materials.
• Ability to calculate distances, clearances, and fits when combining machines.
• Proficiency in using tools and devices to maintain machine accuracy and operating conditions.
• Good attendance and reliability.
• Willingness to work weekend overtime and flexible schedules to meet production needs.
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
