General Description

A Fleet Mechanic is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs a variety of duties on construction projects, including repairs, maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and safety checks on vehicles and equipment. The role requires flexibility to transfer between tasks as work flow dictates.

Key Duties

1. Perform repairs and preventive maintenance services.
2. Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and air systems.
3. Use vehicle electronic systems to interpret failure modes and initiate repairs.
4. Estimate repair costs and requisition parts.
5. Complete work within Standard Repair Times (SRTs).
6. Respond to emergency breakdown service calls.
7. Conduct safety checks on vehicles.
8. Assist senior mechanics with project work.
9. Review and complete or assign repairs on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
10. Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA standards.
11. Weld broken parts and structural members.
12. Read and understand repair manuals.
13. Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
14. Test overhauled equipment to ensure proper operation.
15. May direct cleaning, assembly, and disassembly tasks.
16. Perform related duties as assigned, including incidental work in other crafts.
17. Preferred: Hold or be able to acquire a Class A CDL.
18. Must be flexible to work weekends and a varied schedule.

Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience

Minimum of 3-5 years of industry-related experience as a mechanic, with emphasis on fleet vehicle repair. High school diploma or GED preferred. Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively. Valid Florida driver’s license with a satisfactory record.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, bend, stretch, climb on equipment, and work in a physically demanding environment. Good vision (corrected if necessary), hearing, and alertness are required to ensure safety.

Work Environment

Work is outdoors in all weather, near heavy equipment and machinery, with exposure to noise, grease, dust, and construction substances.
