Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for supervising, planning, prioritizing, assigning, and directing the work of the fleet division staff in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Administers a complete garage parts operation, cataloging, ordering, and maintaining inventory of automotive and equipment parts for the City garage. Writes service work orders for required maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Coordinate, schedule, assign, and supervise preventative and routine maintenance on city vehicles.
  2. Provide work instructions to employees on the work to be performed, materials needed, and equipment used.
  3. Provide timely, accurate responses to service requests.
  4. Assist in developing innovative programs and methods for delivering high-quality customer service in the fleet division, promoting communication and information flow with other departments, divisions, and vendors.
  5. Generate job orders for repairs to City vehicles and equipment; responsible for entering labor and parts data.
  6. Cross-train with the Fleet Administrative Assistant on entering job orders.
  7. Develop and maintain records related to fleet repair and maintenance.
  8. Manage, organize, order, and maintain parts inventory.
  9. Seek competitive pricing on parts.
  10. Maintain and track warranties on new vehicles.
  11. Respond to radio and phone calls regarding breakdowns and towing issues.
  12. Monitor towing of City vehicles.
  13. Report to fleet supervisor on staff performance and work status.
  14. Ensure all activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

SNOW REMOVAL DUTIES:

  • Oversee snow removal crews on the night shift (6 pm - 6 am) from approximately October 1 to April.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:

Preferred an Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school. Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive, truck, and heavy equipment repair and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of fleet management standards, trends, and technological developments; principles of management, budgeting, and cost control; automotive repair shop management; safety regulations; supervisory principles; labor agreements; occupational hazards; and safety precautions. Excellent skills in public, employee, and labor relations; business practices related to fleet management; system analysis; computer utilization; financial record keeping; vehicle replacement policies; preventative maintenance programs; procurement; resource utilization; budget and project analysis; report writing; and inventory management. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and accounting software. Ability to maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, read technical manuals, juggle priorities, work varied schedules, and supervise others.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with tanker and passenger endorsements or equivalent within 45 days of hire.
  • Master Level ASE Certification preferred or minimum of two ASE certifications within 120 days of employment.
  • Master Level EVT Certification preferred or minimum of two EVTs within 120 days of hire.
