The City of Bartow is seeking a skilled mechanic to perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment. Job description

This position performs skilled work with general supervision, and production control of workflow. Mechanical work includes maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of automobiles, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, aerial bucket trucks, tractors, loaders, graders, compressors, and other equipment. Work involves the responsibility for inspection, evaluation, and repairing the mechanical conditions of all types of motorized equipment. This shall include final road testing (when applicable) to ensure the accuracy of the work performed. A superior quality of work is expected, with employee using factory technical manuals/electronic/web/based data for proper repair techniques. Work is performed under minimal supervision and reviewed based on results achieved.•Performs general repairs to brake systems (air and hydraulic); ignition systems; diesel and gasoline fuel systems; hydraulic systems; electrical systems; heavy mechanical systems; engines; transmissions; drive train components; other automotive-related items with minimal assistance.
•Performs preventive maintenance on all types of Fleet equipment
•Obtains shop foremen/supervisor's authorization and researches the maintenance history of subject vehicles before performing major or costly repairs.
•Completes work orders for each vehicle, detailing the description of the repair, repair codes, time requirement, shop parts, and fluids used.
•Performs metal fabrication and welding tasks with assistance
•Troubleshoots problems using diagnostic equipment.
•Prepare vehicles and equipment for auction.
•May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
•Ability to be on call on a rotating basis- Perform tasks in the field.
•Performs maintenance and servicing of shop equipment.
•Performs shop and parking area cleanup as tasked and upon observation of cleanup requirements.
•Performs related work as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Minimal•Advanced knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light, medium and heavy-duty automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment.
•Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and repair components according to manuals, factory specifications and knowledge of engine performances, using hand-tools, power tools, and computerized testing instruments. This includes air and water-cooled gas and diesel equipment
•Ability to perform all types of gas and electric welding
•Ability to understand and perform oral and written instruction and to follow automotive diagrams
•Ability to perform a variety of equipment repairs, operate motor vehicles, inspect and tune-up equipment, perform body and fender work, install accessories, perform oxygen acetylene and electrical welding, and repair and replace fuel injection systems
•Advanced knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
•Ability to inspect automotive equipment for serviceability, diagnosis, and troubleshooting and to organize repair sequences logically and efficiently.
•Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
•Ability to read and comprehend service and operating reference materials for various types of equipment.
•Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors, work cooperatively with other mechanics, and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and with the public.
•Ability to properly use and return to storage City owned shop tools and other materials.
•Ability to perform tire servicing, repair, and replacement as required.
•Ability to occasionally perform oxyacetylene and electronic welding as required.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent, Trade school certification may be considered; 3-5 years of experience in the automotive/heavy equipment/Transit repair industry; Completed/maintains a minimum of I Master ASE Heavy certification required. ( I Heavy certification/EVT certification counts as I ASE Heavy Master Certification) or have demonstrated superior automotive/equipment repair skills; Other technical school or manufacturer's certifications will be reviewed to determine if equitable to equal ASE Master Certifications. Certification in basic welding preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
•Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
•Must possess a valid Class "A" or "B" CDL permit with appropriate endorsements.
•MACS a/c certification or equivalent
•Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
•This position may be designated as Mission Critical by the City Manager
•Must provide their own basic hand tools suitable for use on the City's motorized equipment.

•This work requires continuous walking, bending, twisting, standing, and handling items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds throughout the work shift.

Mental Demands:
•Required to use written and oral communication skills.
•Read and interpret data, wiring diagrams, diagnostic software information, and technical documents with minimal assistance
•Work under deadlines with frequent interruptions.

Work Environment:
