An employee in this class services, diagnoses, and repairs passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and heavy equipment for the city fleet. The employee ensures all aspects of repair are completed, including paperwork submission. Repair work includes breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside repairs, ensuring the safe operating condition of fleet vehicles. Work resources may include manuals, videos, and supervisor instructions. The role requires thorough knowledge of mechanics and repairs of all vehicle types. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent and is evaluated through service logs, reports, and completed work. This classification is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Essential responsibilities include diagnosing vehicle malfunctions, inspecting and repairing heavy equipment, responding to roadside emergencies, performing welding and fabrication, diagnosing hydraulic systems, ordering parts, and maintaining records. Final operational tests are performed to quality-check repairs.
Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED
Driver's License: North Carolina Class C, with a goal to obtain Class B within 6 months
Technical Certifications: Auto and Light Truck Certifications (minimum of 4)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to perform vehicle maintenance, interpret technical documentation, understand hazards, read wiring schematics, follow complex instructions, interpret regulations, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of safety practices, welding, and OSHA standards is required. Customer service skills and record-keeping are essential.
