Work Day/Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) seeks YOU to join our team of more than 380 talented employees providing critical water and sewer services for Durham’s 309,000+ residents. This position focuses on maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants, dams, and lift stations. Responsibilities include performing routine to specialized preventive and corrective maintenance, repairing pumps, motors, gearboxes, fabricating parts, and working with various equipment and tools. The role also involves testing and rebuilding equipment, cleaning work areas, and serving as an emergency standby responder on a rotating basis. You may need to order parts, communicate with technical representatives and OEMs, and work with various machinery and tools.

  • Perform preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance using specialized equipment and tools.
  • Inspect, test, and clean equipment to ensure proper operation and safety compliance.
  • Support office and operational tasks such as managing work orders, maintaining inventories, cleaning work areas, responding to emergencies, and training staff.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
  • Two (2) years of related experience, or completion of DWM's training program as a Plant Maintenance Apprentice.
  • Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license or willingness to obtain one within 60 days.
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL-B license with Tanker Endorsement within 1 year.
  • AWWA Maintenance Technologist I certification (must be obtained within 2 years of hire).

Additional Certifications and Experience:

  • NC Grade 1 Wastewater Collections.
  • Welding, OSHA Confined Space, and Forklift certifications.
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Extensive OSHA safety knowledge, especially Lock-out/Tag-out procedures.
  • Skilled in welding practices (stick, TIG, MIG, torch).
  • Machine shop experience with lathes, milling machines, etc.
