NCDOT is looking for a highly motivated individual looking for a position with the potential of career advancement. This position will provide all state benefits including paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement. The employee in this position will function as an Engineering Technician I in the Division One, District 3 Construction office. This position involves technical work supporting technicians and engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, and construction traffic control. This position requires the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. This work involves limited decision making and use of judgment. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee will be required to perform a full range of calculations and computations and be proficient in record keeping.

Applicants are not required to have a degree to qualify for this position. Applicants with at least two years of related experience are highly encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software
  • Experience in customer service and interacting with the public

Additional Expectations

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and / or construction surveying
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

If there are not any qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
