Job summary

South Carolina State University in Orangeburg invites applications for a First Year Advisor who will work with faculty and staff to support first-year students, helping them select courses, identify strengths, and choose a major.

The advisor will build rapport, monitor progress, assist with workshops and orientation, provide counseling, and connect students with resources, while handling confidential information and supporting student success.

Qualifications

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • More education or experience in education or counseling may be preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Build rapport with students.
  • Help students identify strengths and weaknesses and assist with setting academic and career goals.
  • Develop strategic study habits and other skills to ensure success.
  • Analyze data and track student progress towards goals.
  • Connect students with additional resources as needed.
  • Coordinate and present academic workshops.
  • Manage, respond, and collect data for the Beacon Alerts.
  • Register incoming Freshmen.
  • Assist with Mentor Collective data information.
  • Assist with New Student Orientation.
  • Assist with Fall Convocation.
  • Provide counseling to students.
  • Assist with all other duties assigned by the Assistant Director of First Year Experience and the Executive Director of First Year Experience.
