Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Firmware Controls Engineer in Wisconsin to design, implement, and maintain advanced control algorithms for precision VFDs. You will work with embedded systems, electrical hardware teams, and customers to deliver high-performance motor control solutions.

You will apply control theory, FPGA/Verilog, and real-time operating systems to develop robust software, document designs, and participate in code reviews.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on motor control and/or DC/DC converters.
• Strong experience applying control theory to engineering problems, especially motor control and power electronics.
• Solid understanding of physics related to electromechanical and power conversion systems.
• Expert-level proficiency with Matlab and Simulink for modeling, simulation, and implementation of control algorithms.
• Experience with real-time operating systems for embedded applications.
• Experience developing with Verilog HDL for FPGA-based control implementations.
• Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded software development on microcontrollers or processors.
• Experience using Git or similar version control systems for collaborative software development.
• At least 3 years of related experience in firmware, embedded systems, or controls engineering.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, debug, and support OS and application software for precision VFDs meeting specs and customer needs.
• Develop and maintain firmware algorithms for motor control and power electronics ensuring stability and robustness.
• Follow coding standards, revision control practices, and software development processes for high-quality code.
• Incorporate customer feedback to enhance product performance and usability.
• Participate in code reviews and design reviews to improve software quality.
• Champion new ideas and improvements to advance product capabilities.
• Document software and firmware designs thoroughly for maintenance and future development.
• Track and resolve reported bugs with thorough testing of fixes.
• Design and develop reusable software components and integrate into new/existing products.
• Collaborate with electrical hardware engineers to ensure software/hardware compatibility and reliability.
• Serve as technical lead coordinating with cross-functional teams and customers.
• Use Matlab and Simulink to model, simulate, and validate control algorithms prior to embedded implementation.
