Job summary

Suffolk fire department is actively seeking qualified candidates for emergency response roles in firefighting, emergency rescue, and hazmat containment. The position includes fire suppression, patient care, and operation of fire apparatus in response to alarms across the Suffolk area.

Candidates will train in emergency response techniques, maintain equipment, perform inspections, and support station maintenance.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED and valid driver’s license.
• Virginia firefighter certifications or equivalent and EMT-Intermediate level.
• ACLS/PALS ITLS or equivalent certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazmat incidents and other emergencies.
• Maintains readiness and checks equipment, hoses, pumps, and supplies at the station.
• Drives and operates fire and emergency vehicles; selects routes and positions apparatus.
• Performs rescue, extrication, ventilation, and building access during incidents.
• Administers basic to advanced medical care as trained; stabilizes patients on scene.
• Inserts and maintains records, reports, and run sheets; communicates with dispatch and hospital staff.
• Inspects and maintains buildings, hydrants, and equipment; performs station maintenance.
• Coordinates with law enforcement and public safety agencies as needed.
