Job summary

City of Suffolk is seeking a Firefighter to perform fire suppression, rescue operations, and hazardous material containment. The position involves training, equipment inspection, station maintenance, and responding to alarms with the Suffolk Fire & Rescue team.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and Virginia certifications; EMT-Intermediate preferred, with a valid driver’s license and a year-long field-training path.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED and successful probationary completion from a Fire Fighter Recruit Academy or 3+ years of firefighting experience.
• Must hold a valid driver's license and be eligible for Virginia certifications: Firefighter II, HAZMAT operations, Class III EVOC, EMT-Intermediate.
• Maintain ACLS/PALS ITLS or equivalent preferred and obtain field training certification within one year.

Responsibilities

• Respond to a wide range of emergencies including fires, medical calls, hazmat incidents and rescues.
• Inspect and maintain fire station equipment, test hoses and pumps, and ready apparatus for the next call.
• Provide life safety and patient care, from basic to advanced EMS services as certified, including triage and transport.
• Drive and operate fire apparatus; locate water sources and deploy hoses for effective suppression.
• Perform building inspections, pre-fire planning, and assist public safety and other agencies as needed.
• Maintain records, complete reports, and communicate with supervisors and dispatch and medical facilities.
