Job summary

Larson Design Group, Inc. is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to join our Phoenix team. The engineer will lead design, analysis, and testing of fire protection systems for commercial and government facilities, ensuring code compliance and project success.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited degree in Fire Protection Engineering (Bachelors or Masters).
  • PE licensed is required; QFPE preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience, DoD preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in design, construction, and testing/commissioning of fire protection and life safety systems.
  • Oversees code analysis and design of automatic fire alarm, detection and suppression systems.
  • Prepares construction documents and supports project delivery from inception to closeout.
  • Mentors engineers and interns, supporting technical growth and knowledge transfer.

Your Opportunity + Impact

The Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) works on multi-discipline building design projects of small to large scope for commercial and government facilities, as well as single discipline fire protection engineering projects of small to large scope. This position is responsible for proposal preparation, complete system design, site evaluations, and testing and commissioning of systems. testing/commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in design, construction, and testing/commissioning as it relates to fire protection and life safety.
  • Oversees building code analysis, life safety code analysis, design of automatic fire alarm, detection and suppression systems, water supply analysis, a multi-discipline review of the entire project, construction inspections and witnessing of fire protection acceptance.
  • Performs role as FPE for Federal projects as defined in UFC 3-600-01.
  • Performs independent planning and design tasks, review the work of others, prepare construction documents, and successfully deliver projects to completion.
  • Works on technically complex projects and applies advanced knowledge to resolve challenges.
  • Maintains collaborative inter-departmental and cross-functional working relationships with members of the project team.
  • Conducts initial QA/QC reviews of project submissions to ensure compliance with client requirements and technical standards.
  • Assists senior management in developing schedules, technical proposals, and labor hour estimates.
  • Works closely with project teams to effectively communicate and deliver the scope of work.
  • Promotes, utilizes, and supports quality assurance and quality control processes to enhance deliverables and reduce design errors or omissions.
  • Performs and verifies design calculations, develops technical specifications, and prepares cost estimates.
  • Develops and manages design budgets for routine scopes of work.
  • Provides guidance, training, and support to engineering associates and interns, helping them develop technical skills, design intuition, and professional growth.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline from an ABET accredited school
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years’ of experience, Department of Defense related experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Professional Engineer (PE) required. Qualified Fire Protection Engineer (QFPE), preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrates a strong desire to expand knowledge and take on new responsibilities within the engineering field.
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet project deadlines effectively.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a project team.
