Job summary

The City of Santa Cruz Fire Department is seeking a Fire Prevention Inspector I/II to conduct inspections and enforce fire safety laws. This full-time position includes review of plans, investigations, and public education in accordance with the Fire Department’s standards.

Two levels provide training and advancement; incumbents may ascend from I to II after the probationary period and demonstrated competency in inspection work and code enforcement.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED is required.
• One year of related inspection experience or six college units in Fire Technology.
• Completion of California Fire Prevention/Inspector courses within six months.
• Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial and residential buildings.
• Review plans for fire and life safety compliance and enforce regulations.
• Test fire alarms, sprinkler systems and other detection devices.
• Conduct public safety education and fire prevention surveys.
• Prepare reports and maintain records of inspections.
