City of Santa Cruz Fire Department is seeking a Fire Prevention Inspector I/II. This full-time role focuses on conducting fire prevention inspections, reviewing building plans, and performing fire investigations to enforce fire safety regulations.

The position offers training opportunities, potential progression to Inspector II, and requires the ability to respond to inspections and public safety needs as required.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• One year of experience in any related inspection field OR 6 college-level units in Fire Technology.
• Completion of California State Fire Training Fire Prevention 1A or Prevention 1 or Fire Inspector 1A course within six months of appointment.
• Fire Inspector II requires completion of California State Fire Marshall “Fire Prevention Officer” or “Fire Inspector I” within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fire prevention occupancy inspections in commercial and residential buildings.
• Inspect storage and handling of reactive materials, explosives, and flammable liquids.
• Test fire alarms, sprinkler systems, heat and smoke detection devices, and other fire protection devices.
• Review plans for proposed buildings and fire protection systems for compliance with fire and life safety regulations.
• Assist with public relations and educational programs on fire safety.
• Prepare reports and maintain records related to inspection duties.
