Job summary

The Mat-Su Borough is seeking a dedicated firefighter to operate as part of a 56-hour Kelly shift schedule in Wasilla, Alaska. You will drive and operate assigned fire apparatus, respond to emergencies, perform firefighting tasks, and participate in training and public safety education.

Qualifications include Alaska Firefighter I and Driver/Operator certifications, a high school diploma, and a valid Alaska driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training.
• Three years in the occupational field, with at least one year as a firefighter.
• Valid Alaska driver’s license; 19+ with one year driving experience.
• State of Alaska Firefighter I certification required at hire.
• State of Alaska Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator certification required at hire (Aerial, Driver, Pumper, Mobile Water Supply). Out-of-state applicants must be Pro-Board or IFSAC certified.
• ETT certification preferred at time of hire.
• Completion of ICS 100 & IS 700 within 90 days, and ICS 200 & IS 800 within 1 year of hire.
• Background check, drug screen, respirator fit test, PAT, and NFPA 1582 exam; annual testing.
• Baseline audiometry, Hepatitis B vaccination, and TB screening as required.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergencies including fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, and public service calls.
• Drives fire/rescue apparatus to scenes and during routine duties.
• Sets up and operates equipment at emergencies; handles pumps, aerial devices, generators, and hoses.
• Performs pump hydraulics calculations and safety procedures per SOPs.
• Inspects, maintains, inventories, and loads firefighting and EMS equipment.
• Renders medical assistance to the level of certification.
• Maintains PPE and participates in training classes and drills.
• Assists in fire prevention programs and building inspections.
