Job summary

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is seeking a Firefighter to drive and operate assigned fire apparatus in response to emergencies and to perform firefighting duties in accordance with Borough policies and core values.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, Alaska Firefighter I, Alaska Driver/Operator, and ICS coursework with 3 years in the field (1 year as a firefighter). Eligible for a 56-hour Kelly shift with a salary of $74,472.32–$80,611.23 DOE.

• Alaska firefighter and driver/operator certifications required; out-of-state certifications accepted with Pro-Board/IFSAC.

• Complete ICS courses IC-100/IS-700 within 90 days and IC-200/IS-800 within 1 year.

Responsibilities

• Responds to fires, accidents, medicals, rescues, and public service calls.
• Drives assigned fire/rescue apparatus to scenes and during routine duties.
• Operates pumps, aerial devices, generators, hoses and related equipment.
• Inspects and maintains firefighting tools and equipment.
• Provides EMS assistance to the level of certification.
• Participates in training and drills; assists in education programs.
• Completes reports; assists with fire prevention and inspections.

Job description

This position is responsible for driving and operating assigned fire apparatus in response to emergency calls and for operating as a firefighter.

This is a 56-hour position (Kelly Shift Schedule)
$74,472.32 - $80,611.23 Annual DOE

N1 - N5 FF - DOE

High school diploma or equivalent, and specialized training in the field of work including college courses, certificate program, apprenticeship, etc.

Three (3) years of experience in the occupational field, with a minimum of one (1) year as a firefighter. Relevant experience may include experience in fire, emergency, and rescue response and operations; fire training, protection, and suppression; or work in airport or military engineering environments involving fire safety systems, emergency response coordination, or hazardous materials management. Experience in building construction trades may also be considered if work demonstrates understanding of structural integrity, fire behavior in buildings, or how various construction materials respond to fire suppression efforts.

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.

Possession of State of Alaska Firefighter I certification required at time of hire.

Possession of State of Alaska Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator certification required at the time of hire. This is inclusive of levels: Aerial, Driver, Pumper, and Mobile Water Supply. Out of state applicants must be Pro-Board or IFSAC certified.

Possession of Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) certification preferred at the time of hire.

Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses, IC 100 and IS 700 within ninety (90) days of hire, and IC 200 and IS 800 within one (1) year of hire.

Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, respirator fit test, physical ability test (PAT), and NFPA 1582 physical exam in addition to an annual respirator fit test, PAT test and NFPA 1582. Must complete a baseline audiometry screening and will be required to undergo annual testing as part of the Hearing Conservation Program. Must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and complete Tuberculosis (TB) screening, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.

• Responds to various emergencies and calls for service, including fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, public service assists, etc.
• Drives assigned fire/rescue apparatus to emergency scenes and during routine duties.
• Positions, sets up, and operates apparatus and equipment at emergency scenes.
• Performs a variety of technical and manual labor duties to operate fire pumps, aerial devices, generators, hand and power tools, and hoses.
• Calculates appropriate pump discharge pressures for given fire flows utilizing hydraulics calculations and standard operating guidelines.
• Inspects, maintains, cleans, stocks and loads a variety of firefighting, rescue and EMS related tools, equipment and supplies.
• Renders emergency medical assistance to level of certification.
• Wears and maintains various types of personal protective equipment and clothing.
• Participates and assists in training classes and drills.
• Cleans, maintains and performs minor repairs to fire station and grounds.
• Delivers public fire and life safety education programs, tours, lectures, etc.
• Operates hose lines, fire streams, forcible entry tools, ventilation fans/blowers, salvage and overhaul equipment, hand tools, power tools and other equipment.
• Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.
• Participates in building inspections and assists with fire prevention programs.
• Tests and inventories hoses.
• Performs related duties.
