Job summary

Matanuska-Susitna Borough is seeking a basic firefighter to join a crew under direct supervision, performing essential tasks at fire and emergency scenes across the Borough. Residency within the Fire Service Area is preferred.

Requirements include completion of the Mat-Su Borough Basic Firefighter course or equivalent, vision and hearing standards, ICS coursework, and health screenings; a valid Alaska license and 19+ years of age with driving experience are also required.

Qualifications

• Residency within the Fire Service Area is preferred.
• Successful completion of Mat-Su Borough Basic Firefighter course or equivalent training program.
• Vision requirements: ability to see and operate equipment safely.
• Hearing requirements: thresholds no greater than 25 dB without hearing aids.
• ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 classes required before being cleared to respond to calls.
• Bloodborne Pathogens & Hazardous Materials courses required before you can respond to a call.
• Possession of a valid Alaska state driver’s license; must be 19+ years old with one year of driving experience and acceptable driving record.
• Pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, physical exam, respirator fit test; Hepatitis B vaccination series and TB screening or signed declinations.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision functions at the task level to accomplish tactical objectives.
• Pulls and advances attack hose lines.
• Conducts searches for victims in burning buildings.
• Performs ventilation, forcible entry, property conservation, and other tasks on fire and emergency scenes.
• Inspects and cares for assigned PPE, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
• Maintains fire stations for cleanliness and readiness.
• When staffing the EOC, follows directions of the Event Commander to respond and manage incidents.
• Performs related work as required.
