The HRA of New Britain, Inc. is seeking a Financial Services Specialist to support the VITA program in New Britain, CT.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or higher in Business, Accounting or related field; or at least three years of tax prep experience.
  • Experience with financial stability programs or financial services preferred.
  • Ability to supervise VITA volunteers and site operations.

Description:

The Financial Services Specialist will be responsible for helping individuals and families move toward financial stability and achieve financial goals. Program components may include some or all of the following: information and referral – specific to EITC and Financial Opportunity Center services; financial education workshops; development of community partnerships;financial and/or employment coaching/case management; and data compliance. This position will also be responsible for providing coordination, organization and supervision in all aspects of site locations under the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program from the establishment of a site in the community to overseeing the site operation during the filing season.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (others may be assigned based upon program needs):
  • Supervision of VITA volunteers and overseeing VITA site operations during the filing season.
  • Monitor adherence to the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct and Quality Site Requirements.
  • Ensure that adequate volunteer coverage (including assistor, screener, quality reviewer), supplies, and equipment is scheduled/maintained at corresponding sites.
  • Act as liaison between volunteers, the volunteer site and relevant sponsors, stakeholders and/or partners.
  • Develop, plan and conduct outreach/engagement activities specific to VITA, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), ACEs and other department programs.
  • Build and strengthen existing community relationships in support of EITC and other program outcomes.
  • Collaborate with coaching staff to ensure referrals to center services.
  • Regularly follow up with coaching staff on financial goal achievement.
  • Use CAPTAIN and/or other data management systems, to document and reflect client outcomes, as well as report to funders.
  • Coordinate with internal staff (financial coaches and others) and external partners to provide a continuum of service for clients.
  • In consultation with the supervisor and Financial Opportunity Center team, design and facilitate group activities and/or workshops; determine appropriate curricula and/or instructional methods for target audience.
  • Work in coordination with collaborating agencies on various program components; share responsibility for operationalizing collaborative agreements.
  • At the conclusion of filing season, work with Program Staff, site sponsors, stakeholders (including the IRS) and/or partners to host a recognition event for volunteers.
  • Serve on various committees of agency/division as deemed appropriate by Program Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Associates Degree or higher in Business, Accounting or related field; OR at least three (3) years of documented experience in tax preparation in lieu of degree. Experience working with Financial Stability or other financial service focused programs is desired.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to work with individuals from varying socio-economic levels
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work as needed.
  • Ability to work some weekend and evening hours as requested.
  • Must be able to write clearly and concisely; read and interpret data using basic statistical principles; perform budgeting and mathematical functions; and analyses.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of software applications.
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal social service resources.
  • Must possess personal qualities necessary to relate to clients and staff.
  • Must have strong documentation skills.
  • Able to operate office equipment (e.g. computers, fax, photocopy, postage machines etc.).
Physical Requirements:
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
Language Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write and speak English, Spanish and/or Polish (Preferred)
