Job Summary

The Financial Counselor performs quality control for Observation, Inpatient, and Outpatient Surgery accounts, ensuring all pertinent information is available and accurately documented for timely and efficient billing. Duties include accurate validation of patient demographics, insurance verification, determining all sources of funding available to the patient, collecting co‑pays/deductibles, resolving outstanding financial issues before discharge, screening patients for third‑party liability, assisting patients with related applications, routing third‑party applications to the appropriate location, and conducting thorough evaluations of documents required for Medicaid, Harris Health FAP, Crime Victims, and other qualified Medicaid applications.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED; Associate’s degree or 2 years of college preferred.
• Work Experience: Minimum 3 years of progressive customer service experience or 2 years of hospital patient accounting experience as a financial counselor, collector, registrar, or related capacity.
• Equipment: PC skills; knowledge of computerized patient accounting/registration and eligibility systems; familiarity with facsimile operation, Medifax, photocopier, and FSS system.

• Communication Skills: Above average verbal; bilingual skills preferred; writing/composing correspondence and reports.
• Other Skills: Analytical, mathematics, PC, MS Word, MS Excel.
• Work Schedule: Weekends, flexible.
