This position is responsible and accountable for administering the Bank’s accounting practices so that they are efficient and effective. The Assistant Controller must ensure timely and accurate processing and reconciliation of accounts and transactions, timely and accurate financial reporting to management, auditors and regulatory agencies for the Bank, its subsidiaries, and affiliated organizations. Performs all duties in conformance with Bank policy and all federal and state regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Directs and manages accounting department. Ensures that the Department is adequately staffed with properly trained personnel, which includes approving the decisions of Accounting Manager regarding employment, personnel problems, performance ratings, promotions, salary recommendations, transfers and terminations. Ensures that the staff adheres to standards, policies and procedures.
- Reviews work prepared by senior accountants for accuracy, timely resolution of differences and timely submission of reports.
- Responsible for overall management of investment portfolio accounting/operations
- Collaborates with Controller on accounting research, yearly accruals.
- Recommends, establishes, evaluates and implements accounting operational and processing systems to improve department efficiencies and the integrity of the Bank’s financial records. Communicates and documents new methods and procedures.
- Reviews spreadsheets/accounting for back-to-back SWAPs, BOLI, Charitable Foundation, CECL, Lending Club portfolio, month-end analytics, and lease accounting.
- Responsible for review and/or preparation of regulatory and other reports, including the Call report, summary of deposits and monthly reconciliation binder.
- Review of financial and management reports. Reports include Balance Sheet, Income Statement, daily liquidity, monthly departmental budget to actual.
- Reviews other accounting assignments that may include preparation of annual personal property town declarations, work papers for external auditors, and others.
- Responsible for the creation and updating of a departmental policy and procedures manual.
- Responsible for the completion of all departmental projects as assigned by the Controller and the CFO. Coordinate identified projects with other departments at the Bank.
- Serves as back-up for the Controller, Accounting Manager and other members of the department. Performs other duties as requested.
- Coordinates with Controller and CFO to update authorized signers for all due from bank accounts.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field or equivalent experience.
- Five years of experience in accounting/finance department.
- Supervisory management experience.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong computer and accounting systems background.
- Detail oriented with the proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to listen to employee needs and to inform, educate and influence employees to effectively.
- Creativity, negotiation and problem-solving skills are needed, using a wide range of information and perspective to identify current conditions and needs.
- Proven ability to work effectively under time constraints. Flexibility to respond to multiple assignments or situations.
- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills are necessary to effectively convey goals and initiatives to staff and management. Working knowledge of PC required, including Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and internal bank software.
- Ability to lead and motivate members of the accounting department.
