CFS in Shelton, CT is seeking a Financial Controller to join its senior leadership team. You will oversee a finance organization of about 10 employees and provide leadership across accounting, FP&A, treasury, and reporting, ensuring GAAP compliance and strong internal controls.

Job description

Location: Shelton, CT
Schedule: Hybrid – Monday, Thursday & Friday onsite; Tuesday & Wednesday remote
Compensation: $220,000–$225,000 base + up to 25% bonus

We are working with a well-established, mission‑driven organization seeking a Financial Controller to join its senior leadership team. This is a highly visible role overseeing both accounting and finance functions while partnering closely with executive leadership.

What You'll Do as the Financial Controller

• Oversee a finance organization of approximately 10 employees
• Provide leadership across accounting, financial reporting, FP&A, treasury, investments, and broader financial operations.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, internal controls, tax, and financial reporting standards.
• Partner with executive leadership on budgeting, forecasting, financial performance, capital management, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide oversight related to treasury, investments, cash management, and financial risk.
• Lead and develop finance staff while continuing to improve processes, controls, and overall department effectiveness.
• Partner closely with IT and other functional leaders on financial systems, data analytics, and technology initiatives.
• Take a direct leadership role in technology implementations and finance transformation projects.

Requirements of the Financial Controller

• Strong accounting and finance leadership experience within financial services; insurance experience is highly preferred but not required.
• Well‑rounded experience across both accounting and FP&A/finance, rather than a career focused exclusively on one area.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, treasury, investments, and financial operations.
• Insurance candidates should ideally bring exposure to STAT accounting, reinsurance, capital management, premium tax, and regulatory requirements.
• Proven leadership experience managing managers and larger accounting/finance teams.
• Experience leading financial systems or technology implementations and working directly with IT is highly desirable.
• CPA is a plus. Candidates coming from public accounting with financial services or insurance clients will also be considered.
• Stable career history and the ability to work onsite in Shelton as required.
