Job summary

New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg.

The Financial Aid Assistant (part-time) will support the Financial Aid and Advising Office, assist students with FAFSA completion and verification, and interact with students and staff by phone, email, virtual meetings, and in person.

Qualifications

  • Significant work experience in an office setting with knowledge of effective office practices.
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication, and computer skills.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to students and the public.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform office support for the Financial Aid and Advising Office with initiative and professionalism.
  • Assist students with FAFSA completion and verification.
  • Interact with students, NRCC personnel, and the public via phone, email, virtual meetings, and in person.
  • Assist with additional tasks as assigned by the Financial Aid Manager.

Job Description

New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the career technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs. Approximately 4,000 students comprise the student body.

Duties
  • Perform office support functions for the Financial Aid and Advising Office using initiative and good judgment while handling matters in a professional, efficient, and timely manner.
  • Assist students and families with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion and verification process.
  • Interact with students, potential students, NRCC personnel and the public via telephone, email, virtual meetings, and in-person communication.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned by the Financial Aid Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Significant work experience in an office setting with demonstrated knowledge of effective office practices.
  • Good organizational skills, oral and written communication skills, and computer skills.
  • Ability to interact with other personnel in a professional manner and provide excellent customer service to students, faculty/staff, and the public.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while working effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Additional Considerations
Additional factors that may be considered include:
  • Work experience in an educational environment.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with PeopleSoft Student Information System (SIS) or other comparable system.
