Job summary

Chowan University is seeking a Financial Aid Advisor to counsel students and families through the financial aid process. You will assist with FAFSA completion, determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid, and make and adjust awards throughout the year.

You will verify student records, communicate award details, and collaborate with admissions and other departments to support applicants and enrolled students. Strong Excel and database skills preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required (Masters a plus).
  • 2 years experience in a University environment (Financial Aid or Admissions a plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Daily processing of admissions acceptance data and daily FAFSA records.
  • Determination for and request of additional documents needed for awarding student.
  • Conduct verification of student records and identifying conflicting data.
  • Awarding of financial aid; ensures applicants receive assistance in the application process for loans and scholarships.
  • Counsels with students and parents concerning the possibility of financial aid.
  • Conduct outreach including calls, mailing, text and other efforts to assist with record completion.
  • Assists students with timely completion of forms.
  • Maintain outside scholarship records including billing and disbursement of funds.
  • Performs loan & literacy counseling.
  • Participate in admissions & athletic in office visits with prospective students and families.
  • Assist with default management activities.
  • Conduct off campus outreach efforts such as high school nights, and FAFSA Days.

Job description

Adjacent to the Wayland L. Jenkins Jr. Fine Arts Center

This position is responsible for counseling and advising students and families on the process to receiving financial aid. The Financial Aid Advisor will help students complete FAFSA, determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid for individual programs, and make awards to students. The Advisor will also make adjustments to awards during the year. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Financial Aid.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Daily processing of admissions acceptance data and daily FAFSA records;

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in the preparation of student financial aid awards; including all student populations: undergraduate, graduate, adult degree, residency licensure and part time.
Work collaboratively with other department across campus.
Participate in University sponsored events.
Attend trainings virtually and in person when presented.
Serve on committees as appointed.
Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The incumbent must possess specific areas of knowledge, skill, and ability to be able to explain and/or demonstrate he/she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities.Furthermore, he/she must conduct such activities in light of the mission and purpose of Chowan University.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (Masters a plus).
  • 2 years experience in a University environment (Financial Aid or Admissions a plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Preferred understanding of Powerfaids and Jenzabar.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to handle various customer service problems tactfully.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, both written and oral.
