Job summary

LAC Federal seeks detail-oriented Film Archiving Technicians to support the preservation and organization of historic motion-picture collections for a major federal cultural heritage institution in Culpeper, Virginia. You will inspect, rehouse, barcode, and inventory film materials, building reliable audiovisual metadata and preparing items for long-term archival storage.

Collaborating with the Film Archivist and agency staff, you will handle both 16mm and 35mm formats, enter data in agency

Qualifications

• At least six months in a library or archives environment performing similar tasks.
• Expertise in motion-picture film identification, handling, and inspection.
• Ability to identify and manage film elements including camera negatives, prints, soundtracks, and fragments.
• Knowledge of historic motion-picture formats and production elements for accurate documentation.
• Knowledge of archival principles and techniques for description and organization.
• Ability to identify preservation concerns and perform basic preservation activities (rehousing).
• Effective communication and professional relationship skills with staff and project personnel.
• Ability to work onsite in Culpeper, VA and obtain required credentials.
• Education/training aligned with FEDLINK labor-category qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Process priority motion-picture collections per processing plans and standards.
• Inspect 16mm and 35mm film to identify titles, reel numbers, and related data.
• Document film elements including negatives, prints, and soundtracks.
• Examine incompletely labeled materials with staff guidance.
• Assess film condition and preservation concerns; elevate as needed.
• Perform basic preservation triage and rehouse films in archival containers.
• Enter inventory and audiovisual metadata into agency systems.
• Apply barcodes and reconcile identifiers with inventory records.
• Review processing for accuracy and document quality-control actions.
• Maintain production logs for quantities, time, and workflow challenges.
• Attend weekly meetings and required training while following security and handling protocols.
