Job summary

LAC Federal seeks a skilled Film Archivist to preserve and improve access to historic motion-picture collections for a major federal cultural institution in Culpeper, Virginia. The archivist will inspect film, assess preservation needs, rehouse materials, and create inventory and descriptive metadata.

The role involves developing processing plans, maintaining quality controls, and producing regular workflow metrics and final reports.

Qualifications

• At least six months of experience in a library or archives environment performing similar tasks.
• Expertise in motion-picture film identification, handling, and inspection.
• Proficiency distinguishing and managing varied film elements (negatives, prints, soundtracks).
• Specialized knowledge of historic motion-picture formats and production elements.
• Knowledge of archival principles, analysis, organization, and description.
• Ability to recognize preservation concerns and perform basic preservation activities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with agency staff.
• Ability to work onsite in Culpeper, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Develop collection processing plans, procedures, and timelines with agency staff.
• Inspect 16mm and 35mm film to identify titles, reel numbers, etc.
• Identify original camera negatives, prints, soundtracks, and related elements.
• Assess film condition and refer to preservation specialists as needed.
• Create and maintain accurate item-level inventory and metadata.
• Track productivity and prepare biweekly progress and monthly metrics reports.
• Schedule and participate in weekly meetings and apply feedback.
