Job Description:

Job Title: Field Veterinarian

Location: Taylorsville, Utah

We are seeking a dedicated Field Veterinarian to join the Animal Industry Division within the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. This role primarily focuses on the Animal Health Program, where you will play a critical part in the prevention and control of animal diseases. Additionally, you will support the Meat and Poultry Inspection program, ensuring the wholesomeness of products for consumers at state-inspected slaughterhouses. The responsibilities will be divided approximately 80% towards animal health duties and 20% towards meat inspection duties.

Responsibilities

1. Review, apply, and enforce the laws, regulations, and policies of the Department.
2. Act as a liaison between UDAF, the Utah Department of Health, veterinarians, and animal owners on issues involving zoonotic diseases such as rabies.
3. Work with industry and other state, national, and international organizations in the development of disease control methods, testing protocols, management practices, and educational materials.
4. Complete required inspections, tasks, and reports in a timely manner. Investigate and manage reportable animal diseases and zoonotic diseases.
5. Coordinate with other Animal Industry programs as needed to enhance animal disease traceability and disease prevention/preparedness.
6. Perform ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections on animals and carcasses at state slaughterhouses.
7. Inspect slaughterhouses for compliance with applicable state and federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Work with all animal species humanely.

Qualifications

1. Experience in clinical veterinary medicine.
2. A current Utah veterinary license and USDA Category II accreditation.
3. A valid Utah driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one) and a safe driving record.
4. Knowledge of various disease control and eradication programs (e.g., rabies, trichomoniasis, brucellosis).
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

*Preference may be given to candidates who have completed Public Health Veterinarian training through the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service.

• Exposure to adverse, inclement, and varying weather conditions
• Must be licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in Utah.
• Must be USDA accredited.
• Risks in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g., working at great heights, in extreme outdoor weather, or facing possible physical attack.
• The work may require strenuous physical exertion such as climbing, lifting objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself or others against physical attack.
• Valid driver license required to operate a vehicle on highways per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
