Job summary

Pecos National Historical Park in Pecos, NM seeks a Field Unit Local (FUL) Masonry Worker to perform maintenance, repair and rebuilding of historic masonry surfaces and structures. The position supports seasonal/permanent schedules with on-call and shift work.

Candidates should have experience with mortar, adobe blocks, period stucco and safe operation of masonry tools; successful applicants will be subject to a probationary review and agency performance evaluation.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform masonry tasks including maintenance, repair, and construction of brick, block, adobe, stone surfaces and structures.
• Skilled in interpreting instructions, specs, and blueprints.
• Ability to measure, layout and lay out courses accurately.
• Proficient in preparing and applying mortar with even distribution and thickness.
• Knowledge of materials used in historic masonry and period-accurate stucco applications.
• Maintain tools and safety practices while working at historic sites.

Job description

You will serve as a Field Unit Local (FUL) Masonry Worker at Pecos National Historical Park.

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11 1/2 months, and will be in a non-pay status at the beginning of January.

You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Probationary Period

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year Probationary Period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This Probationary Period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

• your performance and conduct;
• the needs and interests of the agency;
• whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government;
• and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.

Upon completion of your Probationary Period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

1. ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MASONRY WORKER, WG-3603-7 WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN OUT) -Performs the most difficult and complex Masonry Worker tasks such as maintenance, repair, construction and rebuilding of brick, block, adobe block, stone surfaces and structures such as partitions, walls, walkways, foundations, historic and pre-historic structures, etc. Skilled in the use and operation of common hand and power tools, and measuring devices of the masonry and carpentry trades to perform a variety of tasks in performing maintenance of buildings, facilities and maintained archaeological sites. Skilled in preparing and applying mortar to obtain even distribution and thickness between courses, and that courses are accurately laid. Skilled in making adobe blocks to a variety of historically accurate specifications, applying period accurate stucco on historic structures and sites.
