Job summary

Bluebird Fiber in DeKalb, IL is hiring a Field Technician to install and maintain fiber networks for wholesale, enterprise, and internal projects. You will handle new customer installations, test and document network changes, and support critical restoration efforts.

Candidates should have at least 1 year telecom experience or technical training, plus education preferred. The role requires readiness for day/evening shifts, valid driver's license, and strong communications.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year in telecommunications or equivalent technical training.
• College or Technical degree or equivalent preferred.
• Private line broadband installation and maintenance; DS3/DS1; SONET/DWDM; IP/MPLS experience.

Responsibilities

• Receive, monitor, analyze, and resolve network problems with minimal oversight.
• Coordinate and perform new customer installations for wholesale, enterprise, and colocation customers.
• Provide proper documentation of BBF’s network (Site Audits, Inventory Databases).
• Provide installation, test and acceptance for nodes and colocations into BBF’s network.
• Support emergency restoration for aerial and/or buried fiber optic cable in BBF’s network.
• Provide emergency restoration support for BBF’s network equipment.
• Maintain BBF colocation facilities and report any observations of damage or violation.
• Provide 24x7 network coverage, to include trouble tickets and alarm monitoring at a Tier I level.
• Adhere to the rotational on-call schedule to monitor, support, and dispatch as required.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of 1 years in telecommunications or equivalent technical training
• College or Technical degree or equivalent, preferred
• Private line broadband installation and maintenance
• DS3/DS1 installation and maintenance
• SONET/DWDM installation and maintenance
• IP/MPLS fundamentals
• Test equipment proficiency (OTDR, OSA, DS1/3, and Ethernet)

Skills And Abilities

• Willing to work day, evening, night shifts, overtime, call-ins, weekends, and/or holidays as required. Hours to be worked are determined by job requirements
• Valid state driver license with clean driving record
• Self-motivated and the ability to make sound decisions with minimal supervision
• Strong PC skills
• Strong oral and written communications skills
• Multi-task and maintain composure in a demanding work environment.
• Telecommunications equipment installation, preferred
• Cisco or Alcatel Lucent IP Certifications, preferred
• VOIP Switching and maintenance, preferred
• Fiber optics splicing and maintenance, preferred
• SS7/STP support, preferred

Summary

PRIMARY RESPONSIBLILITES:

• Coordinate and perform new customer installations for wholesale, enterprise, and colocation customers. This could include structured wiring, NID installation and the addition of pluggable cards and jumpers at the Bluebird Fiber locations.
• Provide proper documentation of BBF’s network (Site Audit’s, and Inventory Databases).
• Provide installation, test and acceptance for nodes and collocations into BBF’s network.
• Support emergency restoration for aerial and/or buried fiber optic cable in BBF’s network.
• Provide emergency restoration support for BBF’s network equipment.
• Maintain BBF colocation facilities and report any observations of damage or violation.
• Provide 24x7 network coverage, to include trouble tickets and alarm monitoring at a Tier I level.
