Job summary

Carter Machinery Co. Inc. is seeking a Field Service Technician in Richmond, VA (1st shift) with a starting pay range of $30.45–$43.43 per hour and a potential sign-on bonus up to $5,000.

The role requires repairing heavy equipment, servicing engines, electricals, and monitors at customer sites, with opportunities for overtime and career growth. The ideal candidate will have four+ years of experience, strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, a valid CDL, and the ability to obtain a DOT Medical

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four years’ experience repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing expert level mechanical repairs.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude and ability to analyze complex problems quickly.
  • Ability to repair Caterpillar and competitive components and machines.

Responsibilities

  • Apply expert-level troubleshooting techniques and determine proper repair procedures on all assigned work orders.
  • Service, diagnose and repair/rebuild engines, electrical systems, and computer components at customer sites.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and determine parts needed, then reassemble to factory specifications.
  • Interacting with customers and answering repair-related questions; refer non-repair questions to supervisor.
  • Perform heavy electrical and computer repairs.
  • Interpret and use manuals and bulletins for repairs.
  • Prepare parts requisitions, reports, and other forms; document work clearly and timely.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and tools; perform other duties as assigned.

Job Title: Field Service Technician

Location: Richmond, Virginia

Shift: 1st

Starting Compensation Range: $30.45 - $43.43 per hour

Minimum of three years' relevant heavy equipment field experience is required to be eligible for the $5,000 sign-on bonus. Candidates with less than 3 years’ heavy equipment field experience are eligible for a $2,000 sign-on bonus. Bonuses are made in 2 equal installments at 90 days and 180 days of employment.

What You Will Do:
  • Apply expert level troubleshooting techniques and determine proper repair procedures on all assigned work orders
  • Service, diagnose and repair/rebuild all engine/components regardless of model/maker of equipment, including electrical, computers, and monitors at customer’s jobsite
  • Disassemble, inspect and determine parts needed. Reassemble to factory specifications
  • Interact with customers and answer repair-related questions as required. Refer non-repair related questions to supervisor
  • Perform heavy electrical and computer repairs
  • Interpret and utilize information from operating, maintenance and service manuals/bulletins
  • Inspect components removed from machines to determine their reusability
  • Prepare parts requisitions, parts returns, accurate and complete service reports, and other necessary reports and forms
  • Clearly and concisely document all work and repairs completed in a timely manner
  • Maintain work area, tools and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment
  • Perform various other duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For:
  • Minimum of four years’ experience repairing heavy construction equipment, preferred
  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing expert level mechanical repairs
  • High school diploma or GED, required
  • Thorough knowledge of engines, transmissions, electrical and other related components to troubleshoot and analyze unique and high level problems/issues quickly and improvise using logic and critical thinking skills to make needed repairs
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to repair Caterpillar and competitive components and machines
  • Excellent driving record and the ability to obtain a CDL
  • Ability to become DOT certified with DOT Medical Card
  • Willingness to work any shift and overtime as needed to meet business and customer demands
  • Strong communication with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Self-direction and well organized
  • Proficient use of technical software, databases and manuals
