Job summary

Carter Machinery Co. Inc. is seeking a Field Service Technician in South Hill, Virginia. This role offers up to a $5,000 sign-on bonus with installments at 90 and 180 days of employment.

Responsibilities include diagnosing and repairing engines, electrical systems and monitors at customer sites, performing heavy electrical and computer repairs, and documenting all work clearly. A strong CDL and willingness to work overtime are required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four years’ experience repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Expert level troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical repairs.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of engines, transmissions and electrical components to troubleshoot high level problems quickly.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to repair Caterpillar and competitive components and machines.
  • CDL with driving record suitable for CDL issuance.
  • DOT certification with DOT Medical Card.
  • Willingness to work any shift and overtime.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-direction and organization.
  • Proficient use of technical software, databases and manuals.

  • Disassemble, inspect and source parts; reassemble to factory specifications.
  • Interact with customers and address repair questions; refer non‑repair questions to supervisor.
  • Perform heavy electrical and computer repairs.
  • Interpret manuals and bulletins to guide service.
  • Prepare parts requisitions and accurate service reports.
  • Document all work clearly and promptly.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job description

We are currently offering up to a $5,000 sign‑on bonus for Heavy Equipment Field Service Technicians. $2,500 is payable after 90 days of employment, and the remaining $2,500 is payable after 180 days of employment.

Job Title: Field Service Technician

Location: South Hill, Virginia

Shift: 1st

Starting Compensation Range: $26.88 - $39.07 per hour

Minimum of three years’ relevant heavy equipment field experience is required to be eligible for the $5,000 sign‑on bonus. Candidates with less than 3 years’ heavy equipment field experience are eligible for a $2,000 sign‑on bonus. Bonuses are made in 2 equal installments at 90 days and 180 days of employment.

What You Will Do
  • Apply expert level troubleshooting techniques and determine proper repair procedures on all assigned work orders
  • Service, diagnose and repair/rebuild all engine/components regardless of model/maker of equipment, including electrical, computers, and monitors at customer’s jobsite
  • Disassemble, inspect and determine parts needed. Reassemble to factory specifications
  • Interact with customers and answer repair‑related questions as required. Refer non‑repair related questions to supervisor
  • Perform heavy electrical and computer repairs
  • Interpret and utilize information from operating, maintenance and service manuals/bulletins
  • Inspect components removed from machines to determine their reusability
  • Prepare parts requisitions, parts returns, accurate and complete service reports, and other necessary reports and forms
  • Clearly and concisely document all work and repairs completed in a timely manner
  • Maintain work area, tools and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment
  • Perform various other duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For
  • Minimum of four years’ experience repairing heavy construction equipment, preferred
  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing expert level mechanical repairs
  • High school diploma or GED, required
  • Thorough knowledge of engines, transmissions, electrical and other related components to troubleshoot and analyze unique and high level problems/issues quickly and improvise using logic and critical thinking skills to make needed repairs
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to repair Caterpillar and competitive components and machines
  • Excellent driving record and the ability to obtain a CDL
  • Ability to become DOT certified with DOT Medical Card
  • Willingness to work any shift and overtime as needed to meet business and customer demands
  • Strong communication with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Self‑direction and well organized
  • Proficient use of technical software, databases and manuals
