Job summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a research engineer to support NOAA's Global Monitoring Laboratory divisions HORUS, MACH, NGAS-LA and shipboard pCO2 instruments. The role will help move projects from concept to active deployment, calibrate and maintain atmospheric sensors, and provide field support.

The position requires in-person work at CU Boulder with some hybrid flexibility after training, occasional travel,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (environmental, electrical, electronics) or related field.
  • Ability to conduct in-person lab work in a U.S. government facility and pass a federal background check.
  • Willingness to travel ~10% of the time for fieldwork and deployments.
  • Experience with Python programming.
  • Experience with trace gas measurement equipment and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate, test, document, maintain and repair atmospherics sensors and sampling equipment across ground, aircraft, ship, balloon and autonomous platforms (60%).
  • Provide input to collaborating scientists on engineering solutions for measurement needs (15%).
  • Deploy measurement systems to the field and provide ongoing technical support for field projects (15%).
  • Guide transition of new atmospheric observing technologies toward operational research applications (5%).
  • Perform other relevant duties as necessary (5%).
