Field Project Engineer – Environmental & Heavy Civil Construction

Location: Ocean Township, NJ

Full-Time | Immediate Opening

Compensation: $25–$30/hour + Overtime & Prevailing Wage Opportunities

Typical Total Earnings: No less than $75,000–$90,000+ a year depending on project assignments and hours.

About the Position

We are seeking a Field Project Engineer to join an established environmental and heavy civil construction contractor.

This is not a design engineering position. This is a hands-on, field-based construction role for someone who wants to work directly on active job sites and build a career in project management, construction operations, or field supervision.

You will work alongside Project Managers, Superintendents, field crews, subcontractors, and clients on environmental remediation, heavy civil, ecological restoration, and water infrastructure projects.

The position offers significant exposure to the complete construction process and is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional who wants to learn projects from the field up.

Responsibilities
  • Support Project Managers and Site Superintendents on active construction projects
  • Work directly with in-house construction crews in the field
  • Coordinate and oversee subcontractors and daily site activities
  • Track project progress, manpower, materials, and field conditions
  • Complete daily field reports and project documentation
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and jobsite safety activities
  • Assist with field sampling, surveying, and data collection
  • Support project scheduling, estimating, and construction logisticsAssist with reports, work plans, drawings, and other project documentationCommunicate with Project Managers, clients, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel
  • Help identify and resolve field issues as they arise
  • Ensure work is completed according to project requirements, safety standards, quality requirements, and environmental regulations
  • Travel to project sites as required, including overnight travel
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who wants to be in the field rather than sitting behind a desk designing projects.

We are interested in candidates with 0–5 years of experience in construction, environmental work, civil construction, remediation, utilities, infrastructure, or a related field.

You may currently be working as a:

  • Environmental Scientist
  • Field Technician

A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science, Life Science, Physical Science, or a related discipline is preferred.

Previous experience with environmental remediation, heavy civil construction, excavation, utilities, water/wastewater, groundwater, soil sampling, surveying, site work, or subcontractor coordination is highly desirable but not required.

Candidates should have strong communication and computer skills, a safe driving record, and the ability to travel up to 50% overnight depending on project assignments.

AutoCAD experience is a plus.

What We're Really Looking For

We're looking for someone who is hands-on, dependable, willing to learn, and comfortable working outdoors on active construction sites.

You don't need to be a design engineer. You need to be someone who wants to understand how projects are actually built.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who wants exposure to field operations, project management, estimating, scheduling, subcontractor management, safety, environmental remediation, and heavy civil construction.

The position provides a strong career path toward Project Manager, Superintendent, or Construction Operations leadership.

  • $25–$30/hour based on experience
  • Overtime opportunities
  • Typical annual earnings of $75,000–$90,000+, depending on assignments and hours
  • 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Quarterly profit sharing
  • Automatic 4% employer 401(k) contributions
  • Hands‑on training and career development
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful environmental and infrastructure projects
